We get a lot of questions regarding UV lights and how they really work. Do UV lights in your HVAC system really kill the bacteria and viruses in the air and in your air ducts? Is it worth buying a UV light to put in your air handler for your air conditioning or heat system? Do UV lights work with a heat pump? What about a gas furnace? Air conditioning? What if I have a split or mini split HVAC heating and air conditioning system, can I get a UV light for that? Does the UV light kill Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
The short answer to all of those questions is yes. UV lights do indeed kill many different types of viruses, bacteria, mold and COVID. Let's discuss why that is.
A recent study shows that COVID was indeed susceptible to UV light as shown here in the American Journal of Infection Control.
The journal of Scientific Reports showed here in a study, that two different types of Coronavirus can be killed in the air with UVC light.
Now that you know that UV light does work in killing viruses, is it worth getting installed in your system? Is it safe? Yes, it is worth it and it is safe. You normally have to get the bulbs checked and potentially changed every year but that is one full year of 24-7 protection in your air system. The pricing for the UV lights versus the cost of hospital visits or missing work due to illness are vast.
